A League 2 blog with an overwhelmingly pro-Torquay United bias
Torquay travel to Northampton today on the back of an overdue home win over Shrewsbury on Saturday. They already owe today’s opponents a favour as the Cobblers kindly dispatched the Gulls’ fellow relegation strugglers Grimsby on Friday to widen the gap between the two sides to 9 points.
It might be hopeful to expect another favour at Sixfields today, although the breathing space afforded by recent results may well inject some badly needed confidence into Paul Buckle’s players. However, Northampton have had an extra day to recuperate from their last fixture, which coupled with Torquay’s smaller squad means that they will boast the fresher legs in today’s encounter.
I can’t see Torquay taking 3 points here – their opponents sit 6th in the table and have only been defeated four times at home this season. However a good start today could see the Gulls snatch a point – Northampton aren’t among the division’s big-scoring teams so they may struggle to break down Torquay if the defence turns up today.
My optimism was rewarded last time out, so today I’m going for 1-1; a Torquay goal in the first 20 minutes (from a corner if Nicholson is playing, from the edge of the area if not), with the Gulls defence finally succumbing to pressure in the second half and conceding a scrappy equaliser.
