Greenwich Gull

A League 2 blog with an overwhelmingly pro-Torquay United bias

Morcambe v Torquay

The inconsistent Gulls travel to Morecambe today to try and notch up what could be a crucial away win. Grimsby’s 3-2 win over promotion-chasing Bournemouth last week, coupled with Torquay’s defeat by the same score at home to Crewe, saw the gap between the two sides narrow to just 6 points with 9 games left. Grimsby’s result against such high-flying opposition also demonstrated that it won’t be sufficient for the Gulls to simply rely on the Mariners being the worse performers during the run-in; Torquay will have to pick up some points of their own to avoid the drop.

Here are our remaining opponents this season in the following format:

Team (Home or Away) | Current league position | Current form | Previous result this season

Morecambe (A) | 14th |  WLDWL | 2-2
Shrewsbury (H) | 10th | DWLLL | 1-1
Northampton (A) | 7th | WWWWW | 1-0
Rochdale (H) | 1st | WWDWW | 1-2
Aldershot (A) | 8th | WLLWW | 1-1
Grimsby (A) | 23rd | LWLDW | 0-2
Macclesfield (H) | 20th | WDWLL | 1-2
Bury (A) | 6th | DDDLL | 1-1
Notts County (H) | 2nd | WWDWD | 2-2

In league position terms alone, today’s game is our third most winnable of our remaining fixtures. We’ve got a really tough run in, playing 4 of the top 7 and only 3 games against sides in the bottom half. Our fate will probably be sealed by the results against Grimsby and Macclesfield in April, as it will be a big ask to expect points from our last two games of the season. Hopefully by then we’ll have chalked up enough points to remain safe, but it’s not going to be easy.

One look at the table shows that our fate will to a large degree be dictated by the form of Grimsby – let’s have a quick look at their remaining games:

Rochdale (A) | 1st | WWDWW | 0-2
Northampton (H) | 7th | WWWWW | 0-0
Accrington Stanley (A) | 13th | LDWWL | 2-2
Hereford (A) | 19th | WLLLW | 1-0
Chesterfield (H) | 5th | LWLLD | 2-3
Torquay (H) | 21st | WDWDL | 2-0
Darlington (A) | 24th | LDLLL | 1-1
Barnet (H) | 18th | LDDLW | 0-3
Burton Albion (A) | 12th | LWLDW | 1-2

So the Mariners have a much easier run-in; 5 sides in the bottom half, including 4 of the bottom 7! This throws the clash between the two sides at Blundell Park into stark relief – a win for Torquay here could decide the relegation battle and is clearly a must-win game for the Gulls. If they can put in a good performance today and Rochdale follow the form guide and stuff Grimsby, the morale shift could be enough to give Torquay the upper hand in the weeks to come.
